French 5 bedroom holiday home with pool in the Vendee

A few of our favourite places to visit

Our holiday home in the Vendee is situated close to the historic village of Faymoreau with its own mining museum and 15 minutes from the medieval village of Vouvant.the  river Mere flows through the village which is surrounded by a large forest with cycle routes, picnic areas & lakes.

Champigny is situated approx 25 miles East of the coastal resort of La Rochelle (airport), on the edge of the beautiful woodland Mervent Forest National Park, with its lakes, beaches and lovely walks. Also at les herbiers there is aliesure centre http://www.vert-marine.com/les/herbiers

La Rochelle

La Rochelle is an ancient, historic port with towers and palaces. It is a bustling port and there are many waterside cafes specialising in freshly caught seafood where you can sample the local cuisine. On a Sunday morning, local French artists exhibit and sell their wares on the waterfront. La Rochelle has beaches, an aquarium and many other attractions including the Ile de Re which is well worth a visit and can be reached by a 3km long bridge.

Les Sables D'Olonne and more

The Atlantic coast port of Les Sables D'Olonne, from where the Vendee Globe yacht race starts and finishes, is one hour's drive away. It is a vibrant port with miles of golden sand and also has a zoo and an aquarium. La Tranche sur Mer and L'Aiguillon sur Mer are both a forty-five minute drive away and also offer miles of golden sand and are ideal for swimming and families. The west coast of France is about 1 hour  away with many beautiful beaches (the Gallery shows photos of two of them).but our favourite is Bretignolles-sur-mer Driving South East from the house the cognac vineyards can be reached in about 90 minutes. At Les Herbiers there  is a complete indoor leisure centre: http://www.vert-marine.com/cap-vert-les-herbiers-85/acces-contact.php. The Renaissance town of Fontenay le Comte is about 20 minutes from the property with canal restaurants and many shops. You can buy English papers here from Le Clerc (a very large supermarket) which is about five minutes north of Fontenay.

For Nature Lovers

Nature lovers will find Champigny an ideal base, as it is the gateway to two unique and wonderful places. In the Marais Poitevin, known as the Green Venice, you can punt along the canals and obtain a fascinating insight into the flora and fauna unique to this unusual environment. Then for a totally different experience, walk, horse ride or cycle in the beautiful Mervent forest and visit the Zoo A great family day can be had at Xanton-Chassenon which has a long fresh water lake perfect for sailing, swimming, water-sports (pedal boats, canoes etc are all available for hire) and it also has a flume for children. Within thirty minutes to an hour's drive from Champigny are the sandy beaches of the Vendée and Charente Maritime, including La Rochelle, Ile de Ré, Les Sables d'Olonne and La Tranche sur Mer. If you want a change of pace then the tranquil setting of the Marais Poitevin, with its Venise Vert waterways are just 20 minutes away. also well worth a visit is velo rail,  more information about Vendee activities at :
